What a joy it was to design this garden for a lovely multigenerational family and help them shape the outdoor space around their new family home. The existing garden was tired and no longer fit for purpose, so our challenge was to create something that worked for everyone—young children, parents, and grandparents alike. The aim was to design a garden that brought the whole family together for cooking, playing, celebrating, and relaxing—while still offering enough space for everyone to enjoy a little peace and privacy when needed.
We made the most of every corner: creating a kitchen garden with raised beds leading to a greenhouse; weaving playful paths and stepping stones through planting for the children to explore, all the way to their climbing frame; and setting out a large patio and outdoor kitchen for big family meals and parties. Tucked away from the main area, we added a small, quieter terrace—just right for the grandparents to relax and escape the bustle.
We kept as much of the existing garden as possible, working around mature trees, established shrubs, hedges, and the original pond. These features helped ground the new design and give it a sense of continuity and character.
Now, the garden is a space for the whole family to enjoy—together and individually—and we’re so pleased to see it being used just as it was intended.
